The arrogance of the left.

Tuning Out the Democrats – NYTimes.com. This is a very nice elaboration on why many U. S. voters have progressive priorities, but vote for paleolithic reactionaries – very much worth the read.

Progressives need to be very careful about the tone of their rhetoric – it can’t smack of any form of “we know what’s best for you.” This perception (whether or not it is true) is what usually sinks center left governments. The perception is also less likely to develop when the issues that are most important to voters are dealt with at a more local or regional level. The U. S. and Canada are huge countries with striking regional differences – very different from smaller, less diverse European countries.
