Participatory budgeting

For Some New Yorkers, a Grand Experiment in Participatory Budgeting – NYTimes.com.  While I think this is a good idea, it misses the crucial point that there is a whole other part to budgeting besides spending wisely – taxation and other fees. What would have happened if citizens would have been given the option to reduce their property or income taxes?

Voters aren’t given the opportunity to be directly responsible for their mistakes.
