It heartens me to think that the death of Christopher Hitchens has had even more impact in the media than than death Steve Jobs. However, I’ve grown tired of the 10 paragraph, “why he was important” response – there must be hundreds of such. This interview by the BBC allows for a much more open ended and considered understanding of the man and what he represented. You will have to put up with the “plummy” accents and attitudes.
However, if I had one critique of the man and the response to his death, it is that, in reality, he committed gradual suicide by cigarette (and, perhaps, alcohol). Very few of the econiums acknowledge this personal failing. It doesn’t particularly matter for the individual Hitchens. It is, however, a profound moral failing with respect to his family and children. The people you love deserve your best efforts. Did Hitchens choose the easy way?

The BBC has an opinion piece on alcohol consumption in “alcohol ambivalent” cultures (England, Scandinavia, U. S. and Canada. Alcohol does not lead to violence, loss of inhibitions, etc. – those are cultural constructs. Many Southern European and Latin cultures do not have any of the alcohol associated problems. Worth a think.
